The online learning start-up NOA (NCOI-Online Academy) was launched in 2016 to disrupt the market of e-learning. Companies can provide their employees with an ‘all you can learn’ subscription. These employees are challenged by gamification, artificial intelligence and personalisation to actively keep learning on a daily basis with 10 minute learning breaks. The result: a fivefold increase of pass rates.

In these times of quarantine, the platform has seen a growth of more than 400% in daily active users. Tom Bos, Online Academy “Our growth ambitions have always been very high, but what happened these past few months exceeded our highest expectations. Corona really fuelled the need for companies to keep training and educating their remotely working teams through our highly effective Online Academy platform. Due to the quarantine measures, the demand obviously shifted from classroom training to online learning. After the acknowledgement at the learning awards earlier this year, we felt we were on the right track. Seeing this being expressed in the numbers is the real confirmation we were looking for.”

The hyper growth also accelerated the further technical development of the platform. ‘’Due to the success of the last months, we had to swiftly move to the next phase on the technological roadmap to deal with rapid growth’’, says Dennis Houtzager, business manager Azure development at Evident.‘’Our team was able to transform the platform to a micro-service-based architecture within a couple of weeks. This cleared out roadblocks that were caused by the rapid growth and ensures the platform can keep dealing with this level of growth’’.

When a start-up such as Online Academy really skyrockets, it can often be a serious challenge to match technology with business growth. David van der Hoop, technical director Evident: “With the power of Azure Application Insights, we were able to pinpoint where to invest our application performance efforts to achieve the biggest results. While our development teams were working on the improvements, we used Azure auto scale rules to dynamically scale the computer resources up to ten times for only a small increase in operational costs.”

‘’Microsoft Azure is a perfect fit for platforms like Online Academy. With serverless options like Azure Functions, combined with the power of auto scaling computer resources allows us to start small and accommodate growth when needed to reach return of investment sooner.’’

Online Academy and Evident together were able to achieve both a positive business outcome and technical improvements to keep students learning during the COVID-19 crisis. Tom Bos: ‘’The platform is now ready for the next phase of even more growth and our joint Online Academy-Evident team is ready to handle all future challenges. And hopefully, we can soon meetup again in Evident Lisbon office to celebrate.’’
